Designer Julie King shows beginners how to insert a brim into a hat using the single crochet stitch.
Giving a crochet hat a wire edge can add tremendous stability, functionality and a professional finish. The best part is that it’s really super easy to make!
The best projects in crochet for beginners Use the single crochet and double crochet stitches most prominently, if not exclusively. This technique uses the single crochet stitch in a way that will take you by beginner to intermediate in one day!
The key to adding a brim to any hat is to work the final turn of your hat on a piece of yarn.
Here are the pattern instructions:
Chain 1, 1 single crochet in each stitch, 2 single crochet every 12 or more stitches to increase.
To make a single crochet on the yarn:
Holding the thread behind your work, insert your hook into the first stitch. Keep the thread on your hook, but under your yarn. Yarn, pull through the point, yarn, pull through the two loops.
Be sure to leave a couple of inches of thread sticking out at the end so you can secure it at the end of the round. Bend the end of the thread at the beginning of the row so that it does not accidentally slip through the round.
Work 2 sc in a stitch create an increase by adding stitches to the round, resulting in more total stitches, or more “fabric” in the current round than the previous one.
The increase is such that the brim is a little wider than last time. This will prevent your brim from rolling out wavy or floppy.
After working the single crochets throughout, it’s time to cut the thread and close the ends. First put the flat edge. Then leave about an inch or two of overlapping wire to wrap them around each other.
Now continue single crocheting on the thread closure. Finally, end with a join invisible for the most perfect finish. He disguised himself as a point!
This simple technique can be used to add shape and definition to any garment or accessory you crochet.
